Two hot Summer Bummer’s, two Overall Winners August 11 & 12, 2007 Little Summer Bummer and 40th Annual Summer Bummer Enduro Presented by: Hill & Gully Enduro Team Roselawn, IN By Ryan Moss Photos by Lou Ann Cousinaw & Erin Thompson The Hill & Gully riders want to celebrate their 40th running of the Summer Bummer in style, so what do they do, they put on a two day event. Day one would consist of a closed course enduro held within the Sun Aura property that brought out many of the infamous Indiana Bares. While day two would be the traditional Summer Bummer taking riders throughout the Indiana countryside. Saturday’s Closed Course Enduro: The weekend started out hot as it was already into the 80’s when I woke up at 6:00am and loaded up the race rig to head out. When we got to the start area and went to sign up we were already soaked in sweat and everyone seemed to have the same look, what are we doing here in this heat? Well luckily for all the riders the Hill & Gully team went all out and laid out almost 12 miles of all new trail on the Sun Aura property for us to enjoy. And they made the speed average low for the first few laps so that we didn’t overheat ourselves on the first day, they definitely thought ahead.

enjoying the Summer Bummer The club planned for 3 laps to be completed by the C, B, and Super Senior riders while the A’s and AA’s would have to complete 4 laps. While some riders thought that may be a little to much in the heat, the club said there were plenty of resets and everything should work out. Well the closed course loop turned out to be a very tight, but tons of fun. While the weather was hot it seemed that the woods were so thick this year it almost made a canopy and seemed to keep the sun from beating down on you as you rode. But as soon as you stopped you could feel the heat and humidity catch up to you. The club was right, they had planned the resets just right, not to much time sitting around but just enough to give you a break and keep fluid in you. Some riders still felt the effects of the heat, especially if you made mistakes and had to pick up your bike a few times each lap, but most riders had a smile on their face at the end of the day. At the end of the day it was the familiar face of Jeff Fredette on his Team Green / FRP / Moose Racing Kawasaki KX450F taking the overall win. Second went to Daniel Janus on his Halls Cycles Gas Gas 250 and third overall went to upcoming AA rider Kiel Mueller on his Klim Racing KTM250XC-W. Overall A was awarded to Jeff Kaylor on Halls Cycles Gas Gas 250 and the Overall B award went to the up and coming B rider (soon to be A I’m sure) Chris Huffman on his KTM 250XC.
Cody “Rev” Dusendang Sunday’s Summer Bummer: The Summer Bummer started out with a small trail section less then a mile long that included a small endurocross section. Some riders got a little to excited about this mile of trail and pinned it through the endurocross section providing entertain for fellow riders and spectators. The more experienced riders took it easy knowing that they club couldn’t have a checkpoint in that short of a section. Then the trail headed out into the Indiana countryside and to a small 4-mile test section. This section was fun as it has fast, flowing trails and was broke up by a wide-open cornfield section. Again the club put in some new trail and kept everyone off some of the sand whoops. The club also arrowed the trail very well making it easy to find and read the trail.

Dusendang As everyone headed back out for more great trail I’m sure the B & C riders were happy to see the route sheet only had two more test sections for them. The first test after gas was one of the twistiest trails that I’ve rode on in a long time. There seemed to be tons of new trail again and I don’t think there was more then a ten feet straight away in the whole section. Well I know there was more then that but at that point many of us were getting hot and this section but some riders into survival mode I’m sure. For the B & C’s they roughly 7 miles of trail left and it seemed that was about right for the majority of the riders from what I heard. The A & AA riders had another 12 miles of trail (the same as the closed course enduro used) once the B & C riders were done, some of us wished we were down too. Seemed that most of the A & AA riders were a little to excited about catching a Bare sighting in the last test section and came in a little early to the first checkpoint. After that a certain Kawasaki rider must have been thinking about the Kodak moment from the previous day and lost focus on dirt bike riding causing one heck of a crash I was told. Luckily everything was ok, just a little memory loss, and he was able to continue. I was lucky enough to find out that the fence post everyone was worried about hitting the previous day during the closed course event can stop you if you loose you back brake and are looking for something to stop your forward motion instantly. At the end of the 40th Summer Bummer is was District 14 fast man Blair Bersano on his Moose Racing Yamaha YZ450F taking the win ahead of Ohio’s Cody Mastin on his Mastin Racing / Moose Racing YZ250. Third Overall went to Daniel Janus on his Hall Cycles Gas Gas 250. Jeff Fredette was fourth overall on his Team Green / FRP / Moose Racing Kawasaki KX450F. The Overall A award went to “Speedy” Pete Laudmeirer on his Team P&G Offroad / Moose Racing KTM200XC-W and the Overall B went to Paul North. The club would like to thank the Sun Aura resort and all the landowners for letting them use their land for the two-day event. They would also like to thank Moose Racing and Pro Grip for supporting the event and all the riders for coming out. Pink Handguards?? That is what happens when you loose a bet to the young guns!
