Rain in the forecast did not detour the 300 plus riders ready to brave the many obstacles that the Grand Kankakee Riders had in store for them. By race time the temperatures soared in the upper 70’s and the sporadic 2 minute long showers help keep the dust down on the grass track. The track consisted of hills, a large grass track, sugar sand whoops, creeks, logs, logs, and even more logs as stated by one club member. The club did a great job of marking the spectator spots; the land owners really enjoyed the creek crossing that seemed to have been mysteriously dammed up, which looked like the work of a busy beaver.

I talked to many riders, most agreed that the freight training through the sugar sand whoops in the second loop was the most tiring section in the whole race and the last section that the AA and A class rode was the most fun. I did have some riders say the creek crossing was the most tiring for them. They must have been the ones that had their bike pulled out with log chains. I did talk to one rider who learned a valuable lesson, think before you take advice from spectators that you do not know or you may end up riding 20 extra miles. I would hate to name names but Scott Hoffman made that mistake. In the second to last section Scott did not see arrows that the spectators were standing in front of and they pointed him onto the wrong trail. Scott ended up placing 11th in the AA class and 13th overall.
